The Ocean Starts Here
Did you know 80% of the plastic that pollutes our oceans comes from cities? Most of the waste left on the streets ends up in the oceans. However, the majority of city residents don’t know that the first step in protecting the oceans is to throw our waste into the garbage.
To help people in cities understand how their urban lifestyle has a direct impact on the oceans, Sea Shepherd and the creative agency FF LA-NY launched a project to bring the oceans to the city.
On World Oceans Day (June 2018), massive posters were printed* and displayed under trash cans on the streets of Los Angeles in Venice Beach’s busy boardwalk, Downtown, and Silverlake. These installations were designed to be a perfect reflection of the ocean surface in the street, with the same wave size of the sea. The actual waste found on the surrounding street was displayed on these posters so passers-by could see that when they throw trash on the ground, they’re throwing it in the oceans.
